WMATA Station Platform Rehabilitation Program Contract 4
Washington, D.C.
The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) Station Platform Rehabilitation Contract 4 includes critical improvements at five station platforms and six bridges/aerial structures along 11 miles of WMATA’s Orange Line in Maryland and Washington, DC. Kiewit’s scope of work at each station included demolition, rehabilitation, construction, testing/commissioning and architectural work, as well as tile installation at the station and mezzanine levels, station lighting, station signage, communications, mechanical, electrical, plumbing and civil scopes.
Overhead work included full bridge deck replacement, significant bearing replacement, concrete spall repairs, epoxy injection of cracks, replacement of handrails and walkways, replacement of the deck-edge protection barrier over CSXT lines and replacement of 328 bearings during a 96-day authorized service outage to minimize impact on WMATA’s train service. Most of the work occurred during this period, which Kiewit and WMATA planned together. This collaboration enabled Kiewit’s engineers to accelerate the design, reduce the project completion schedule, minimize passenger impacts and increase work area safety.
That WMATA Station Platform Rehabilitation Contract 4 project received the 2023 ENR Mid-Atlantic Best Project Award in Airport/Transit and the 2023 Design-Build Institute of America (DBIA) Mid-Atlantic Region Infrastructure Award of Merit.
