Upper Mattagami and Hound Chute Project
Timmins, Ontario
Ontario Power Generation awarded Kiewit-Alarie Partnership the design-build contract for the redevelopment of the Wawaitin, Sandy Falls and Lower Sturgeon hydroelectric generating stations on the Upper Mattagami River and the Hound Chute generating station on the Montreal River.
- Wawaitin Generating Station: Installed two Francis units with a total capacity of 15.8 megawatts in a new powerhouse on a new site located to the west of the existing plant, providing an incremental increase of 5.4 megawatts of power at this location.
- Sandy Falls Generating Station: Installed a single 5.6-megawatt Saxo unit together with a powerhouse/dam structure and integral intake, located upstream of the existing facilities, providing an incremental 2.6 megawatts of power at this location.
- Lower Sturgeon Generating Station: Installed two Saxo units with a total capacity of 14.6 megawatts in a new powerhouse constructed at the existing location, providing an incremental 9.3 megawatts of power at this site.
- Hound Chute Generating Station: Installed two Saxo units with a total capacity of 10 megawatts in a new powerhouse situated to the east of the existing facility for an incremental 6.4 megawatts of power at this location.
Hound Chute GS – KAP installed two “Saxo” units with a total capacity of 10.0 MW, in a new powerhouse to be situated to the east of the existing facility for an incremental 6.4 MW of power at this location.
The team worked more than 1 million hours without a lost-time incident on the project.
