University of Maryland NextGen Energy Program
College Park, Maryland
Maryland Energy Impact Partners (MEIP), which includes Plenary Americas, Kiewit Development Company, Kiewit Power Constructors Co. and Honeywell, is partnering with the University of Maryland to deliver the NextGen Energy Program. This program aims to upgrade and modernize the university’s energy system, providing decades of sustainable energy. Kiewit is the co-developer, lead engineer and contractor for this project.
As part of the Capital Improvements, MEIP will provide expertise and services for a Decarbonization Strategy Development Plan. This plan will involve replacing aging infrastructure with a sustainable energy system that the university can rely on for years to come.
The NextGen Energy Program puts UMD on a pathway to achieve the university’s goal of a fossil fuel-free energy system by 2035 and will increase efficiency and sustainability. With a $390 million investment in campus infrastructure, the program is anticipated to significantly improve energy service on campus and lead to immediate environmental benefits. These benefits include a 23% reduction in carbon emissions and a 50% decrease in water consumption per year.
With a strong commitment to sustainable and efficient solutions, the MEIP team is comprised of industry leaders in innovative project design, financing, construction, asset management and operations. Key members of the MEIP team include Plenary Americas (Sponsor), Kiewit Development (Sponsor), Kiewit Power Constructors (Lead Contractor) and Honeywell (Lead Operator).
Construction commenced in July 2024.
