I-15 FasTrak - San Diego, Calif.
The I-15 FasTrak™ program allows solo drivers to pay a per trip fee to use the existing high occupancy vehicle (HOV) lanes along Interstate 15 between Kearny Mesa and Rancho Penasquitos in San Diego.
I-15 is a heavily traveled highway connecting several north inland communities with major employment centers to the south. The I-15 FasTrak™ program maximizes the use of the excess capacity on the HOV lanes to provide a faster commute. The proceeds fund express buses along I-15, transit improvements and rideshare services.
Since completion, the average daily traffic on the carpool lanes has increased from 9,400 to 20,000 vehicles per day. In addition, the number of daily carpools on the HOV lanes has nearly doubled to more than 15,000.
A Bechtel-Kiewit joint venture provided toll operations services for nearly a year after the program started. The project has brought reduced travel time, reliability of on-time arrival, and improved safety for I-15 commuters.
