North-South LineTrax II - Salt Lake City, Utah
The North-South Light Rail extends 15 miles from the Delta Center in downtown Salt Lake City to Sandy, Utah. Kiewit constructed the 1.5-mile downtown section of the line. The scope of work included utility relocations, traffic control, complete street reconstruction, 16,000 feet of embedded track, overhead catenary pole foundations, traction power duct bank, stray current protection and corrosion control, and passenger stations.
The utility work associated with this section of the project posed numerous challenges to the schedule. These challenges were overcome through close coordination with the Utah Transit Authority (UTA), Salt Lake City and utility owners. Crews worked with the UTA and proactively participated in the local business communication program to address the concerns of and mitigate impacts to the business community. Kiewit achieved substantial completion of the project nine months ahead of schedule after partnering with UTA to accelerate the schedule.
The project received the Associated General Contractors 1999 Project of the Year Award.
