Amtrak Seattle Maintenance Facility - Seattle, Wash.
Located south of the downtown street grid, Amtrak's Pacific Northwest Maintenance Facility sits adjacent to Seahawks Stadium, home to the Seattle Seahawks football team. Completed in 2002, this $19.5 million project consisted of numerous maintenance buildings, site drainage improvements, utility relocation and installation, site grading, and ballasted and fixed track.
The project's location provided an attractive shortcut to 67,000 plus sports fans making their way to the stadium. The additional pedestrian traffic required appropriate signage and fencing during construction to control the masses without a single incident. The wheel truing, train washer, main electrical switchgear and oil/water separator buildings were all pre-engineered structures requiring heavy concrete foundations.
During the estimating process, personnel discovered and documented many design conflicts and suggested all parties meet to perform a pre-construction design document scrub session. As a result of this value engineering initiative, Amtrak requested Kiewit act as construction manager and general contractor. Kiewit quickly assigned personnel to Amtrak's office to work closely with the client's project team.
