Elmendorf AFB Aircraft Weather Shelters - Elmendorf AFB, Alaska
In October 1996, Kiewit finished construction of eight aircraft weather shelters for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to protect USAF F-15E Strike Eagles from the harsh Alaskan environment at Elmendorf Air Force Base.
The shelters feature drive-through aircraft bays with a central core housing, mechanical/electrical support, tool storage, and administration areas. The bays are 63 feet by 73 feet and separated by concrete “blast walls” containing all equipment needed for missile loading, fueling, and normal maintenance operations. Site improvements for the $15 million project involved utility extensions, security and ramp lighting, and apron paving. Of the 36,000 cubic yards of apron paving, 30,000 cubic yards featured 13-inch-thick concrete aircraft pavement with more than six inches of crushed aggregate drainage.
