Selmon Expressway Western Extension
Tampa, Florida
The Tampa Hillsborough Expressway Authority contracted Kiewit for the design and construction of a 1.9-mile elevated tollway extension connecting Selmon Expressway to Gandy Bridge.
The new elevated roadway section included a pre-cast segmental concrete box girder viaduct. Surface street improvements included over 100,000 square yards of asphalt resurfacing, flatwork, curb and gutter, barrier wall, signalization, ITS, signage and lighting.
To reduce costs and improve efficiency, Kiewit’s engineers developed an alternative technical concept for a progressive, span-by-span viaduct that could use an underslung erection girder system. The result reduced concrete, post-tensioning and foundation quantities by more than 20% from the client’s original design.
