Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport Third Runway
Phoenix, Arizona
Completed in 2001, the City of Phoenix awarded this project to Kiewit Western Co., a subsidiary of Kiewit Corporation, for the construction of a 7,800-foot concrete runway and parallel taxiway, associated services roads and the relocation of the Air National Guard apron.
Runway operations included excavation and embankment of fill material; installation of pipe, sanitary sewer line and drainage systems; installation of bank protection for the Salt River; application of runway and taxiway markings; and installation of signing, lighting, fencing and navigational aids. In addition, the scope of work included reconstruction of Taxiway F, while the majority of work was performed inside the active airfield operational area.
Relocating the Air National Guard apron involved constructing a 68,000-square-yard concrete apron with asphalt concrete shoulder and three concrete taxi-lanes with asphalt shoulders. Additional elements of work included an aircraft wash rack, apron markings, drainage systems, an oil water separator, apron lighting, and the relocation of an existing blast fence.
The project originally included four phases of construction; however, due to adjustments to the owner’s schedule, Phases 3 and 4 were delayed more than 360 days. Following a delay of more than one year, crews successfully completed all phases within the terms of the contract.
