Military Ocean Terminal Concord (MOTCO) Pier 2 Replacement

Military Ocean Terminal Concord (MOTCO) Pier 2 Replacement

Concord, California

Pier 2 was originally built in 1944 to support ammunition movements to the Pacific during World War II. Today, the pier primarily accommodates containerized cargo, but its dual-level configuration is not suitable for forklifts and container-handling equipment. Kiewit’s project involved repairing and modernizing Pier 2 to ensure the Army can meet its documented Department of Defense mission requirements.

The demolition work covered 159,000 square feet of pier structure, including the removal of timber and concrete piles, concrete slabs, 200 tons of reinforcing steel, timber pile cap beams, stringers, decking boards and 1,895 cubic yards of asphalt. The modernization included installing over a thousand new 24-inch octagonal pre-stressed concrete piles, reusing up to 150 concrete piles, and adding 11,000 cubic yards of concrete and 3,300 tons of reinforcing steel. Shore-side construction involved building an operations facility and break room, installing a new electrical substation and emergency generators for container crane support, expanding the staging area and repairs and realignment of the road network. Waterside bollards and lighting were installed throughout the area for security. Extensive mechanical, electrical, and plumbing installations were also included.
