Madison Fields Solar Project Collector Substation

Irwin, Ohio

As part of the larger 234 MW solar facility, Kiewit engineered, procured and constructed a 138kV collector substation and the interconnection to a new 138kV switchyard. A single span of transmission conductor extends from the 138kV utility switchyard to the Madison Fields substation, which features a single line position protected by a 138kV circuit breaker. Downstream of the high voltage circuit breaker, a 138-34.5kV step-up transformer connects to a main 34.5kV medium voltage bus with six breaker positions. Four of these medium voltage circuit breakers manage the incoming feeder circuits from the photovoltaic array, one handles the reactive support from a single capacitor bank with two stages and the last breaker position connects a 34.5kV grounding transformer.
