Kauai Battery Energy Storage System

Kiewit engineered, procured and installed a 1.6-megawatt containerized battery energy storage system on Kauai, Hawaii. Due to a significant shift to solar for power generation on the island, the local grid was suffering from large frequency fluctuations. This energy storage system provided an important increase in electricity reliability, as 60 percent of the island’s daytime energy needs were met by solar resources.

Scope included balance of plant engineering, site design and system interconnection. Kiewit worked with the battery and power conversion system manufacturers to streamline integration efforts, allowing for overall design compliance with the safety requirements of local codes.
