Miramar Water Treatment Plant Expansion

San Diego, California

To help the City of San Diego meet increasing water needs and comply with changes to drinking water standards, Kiewit subsidiary, Western Summit, upgraded and expanded this water treatment plant from 140 to 215 million gallons per day. The work was carried out over two contracts detailed below.

CONTRACT A

New construction entailed overflow/rapid mix/splitter box facilities; pre-ozonation/deaeration facilities; ozone facilities; 12 high-rate filters; bulk chemical storage area; chemical feed building; chlorine building; administration building; main switchgear building; clearwell inlet structure; and modifications to the existing flocculation/sedimentation facilities. Western Summit self-performed all excavation, backfill, structural concrete, process equipment, piping and plumbing.

CONTRACT B

Completed in 530 days, this second phase included four new flocculation/sedimentation basins, demolition of additional portions of the original plant and tie-ins to the work completed in Contract A.
