Ho'Okele Elementary School
Kapolei, Hawaii
Kiewit provided the Hawaii Department of Education (DOE) with this new, cost-effective, flexible, and sustainable facility designed to provide a nurturing and exploratory academic environment consistent with the concept of a 21st-century school.
This new learning center is located in Kapolei, one of Hawaii’s fastest-growing cities. Kiewit helped guide the DOE through their first 21st-century learning environment build-out. Recognizing the innovation and progressive ideas that differentiate the 21st-century learning model from standard DOE practices, the familiarity of the project team members with both traditional DOE design and modern design allowed them to lead the DOE in their curriculum transformation.
The project consists of pre-cast tilt-up concrete, a wood-framed arts and science center and a structural steel-covered playground. The campus is home to more than 126,000 SF of classroom and administration spaces, as well as a cafeteria, multi-purpose auditorium, learning gardens, central plaza, 150,000 SF multi-sport field, kindergarten playgrounds and 104-stall parking lot.
