Federal Way Link Extension

Federal Way Link Extension

Federal Way, Washington

To meet the demand for efficient and reliable transit in the rapidly growing Puget Sound region, Sound Transit is expanding the Link Light Rail system southward. The Federal Way Link Extension design-build contract extends 7.8 miles of light rail facilities from Seattle-Tacoma Airport’s (SeaTac) existing Angle Lake Station to Federal Way to provide reliable, rapid and efficient peak and off-peak two-way transit service from Federal Way to SeaTac International Airport and downtown Seattle.

The project, which passes through four municipalities, parallels I-5 for much of its distance. It crosses sections of the WSDOT right-of-way and accommodates future WSDOT expansion projects. The project includes an at-grade retained cut and fill section and elevated guideway. Additionally, it features three stations — two elevated and one at-grade — with garages providing space for 2,300 vehicles.

Kiewit’s scope of work includes all civil, structural, architectural, landscaping, artwork coordination, roadway, utility work, drainage conveyance and stormwater facilities, mechanical, electrical, plumbing and systems elements.

The Federal Way Link Extension Project receive the Envision Platinum designation from the Institute for Sustainable Infrastructure.
