East Rail Maintenance Facility
Whitby, Ontario
The East Rail Maintenance Facility serves the GO Transit Commuter System in the Greater Toronto area and provides maintenance, repair, and additional storage for trains. The large, complex rail system previously relied on one maintenance facility, and the addition of a second facility helps reduce operational risks and increases overall rail service reliability.
Kiewit Development Company served as a developer and equity partner for the project, which used a design-build-maintain-finance (DBFM) delivery model.
Through a joint venture partnership, Kiewit contributed to the design and construction of the project which consisted of 500,000 square feet, LEED-certified maintenance facility, more than 8 miles of storage track and auxiliary buildings. Key elements of the facility include service canopies, a waste management area, electrical substation, track maintenance building, fuel storage, locomotive wash, and wheel shop.
The strong collaboration among the integrated project team helped optimize design refinements and constructability. It also allowed the team to account for future system expansions, including the capacity to support 9 additional twelve-car trains and further electrification of the rail system.
