Cove Point LNG Export Terminal
Lusby, Maryland
Kiewit and joint venture partner IHI engineered, procured and constructed a 5.25-million-metric-tonnes-per-annum LNG export facility. This premier facility opened international markets for the Marcellus and Utica shale plays — two of the most prolific natural gas basins in North America.
Together, the new and existing facilities provided bidirectional import and export capabilities. Kiewit’s scope of work included tie-ins to the existing facility, relocating existing infrastructure to accommodate the expansion and adding a 130-megawatt power plant.
In addition to performing all work at a fully operational facility, the team employed innovative design and construction solutions to meet all environmental and regulatory requirements, preserve the surrounding pristine landscape and bay, and maintain the existing Cove Point footprint.
Kiewit’s foundations scope of work included 678 EA 24- to 60-inch drilled shafts for various soundwall, equipment and pipe rack foundations.
The first LNG export facility on the United States’ East Coast.
