Tappan Zee Bridge

Tarrytown, New York

Kiewit subsidiary Weeks Marine, Inc., has worked on the Tappan Zee Bridge since the early 2000s — initially, as part of Grow Tunneling, securing a contract to construct a groundbreaking pier protection system. Designed by URS Greiner, the system featured precast “T-beam” fenders supported by 96 pipe piles, each capable of bearing between 500 and 750 tons. Concurrently, Weeks executed load testing, armoring and dredging to create a construction access channel for the Tappan Zee Bridge Replacement project.

In 2013, Weeks, as a subcontractor for Tappan Zee Constructors, achieved a remarkable feat by processing and placing 950,000 cubic yards of dredged material within a record timeframe. This included dredging, dewatering, transporting, in-barge processing and capping of the dredged area with armor stone. The endeavor comprised two phases, with Phase I involving 800,000 cubic yards — the largest dredge material processing and upland placement project ever performed in the New York Harbor at that time.

Recent engagements include dredging, transporting and offloading 800,000 cubic yards of contaminated material. Using Weeks Marine’s in-barge stabilization and solidification method, the team processed the dredged material at Weeks’ Greenville Yard in Jersey City, New Jersey.
