Henry Ford Health Central Energy Hub
Detroit, Michigan
Henry Ford Health Energy Partners, a team led by Kiewit Development Company and including Kiewit Power Constructors Co. and Veolia Energy Operating Services, LLC, is partnering with Henry Ford Health to design and build its new Central Energy Hub as part of its major campus expansion project in Detroit, known as Destination: Grand.
The Central Energy Hub, a key component of the expansion, will provide heating and cooling via a hot and chilled water system that will tie into the new hospital facilities. The facility’s design incorporates advanced technologies such as electrification, waste heat recovery and digital energy management. The plant supports Henry Ford Health’s systemwide goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 50% by 2030 and achieving net zero emissions by 2050.
“We are very excited to be partnering with Henry Ford Health to help them deliver on their overall hospital campus expansion plans to better serve the people of Detroit. With project financing that includes tax-exempt green bonds, our team worked tirelessly to provide a cost-effective solution for Henry Ford Health that also reflects the project’s important emphasis on sustainability.”

Kiewit Development Company partnered with Provident Resources Group Inc., a leading national 501(c)(3) organization that manages projects in healthcare, education, workforce housing, hospitality, governmental, and essential services, to facilitate the tax-exempt green bond issuance.
The Energy Partners team will work together to design, build, finance, operate, and maintain the state-of-the-art facility. This facility will provide a reliable and eco-friendly energy supply, supporting Henry Ford Health’s net-zero goals for the long term.
Construction on the Central Energy Hub is expected to begin in late 2024, with an estimated completion date in the spring of 2027.
