Fairview Container Terminal Expansion
Prince Rupert, British Columbia
To meet the growing trade demand, DP World’s Fairview Container Terminal, an intermodal (ship-to-rail) container terminal in North America’s Pacific trade gateway in Prince Rupert, BC, expanded its annual capacity from 1.6 to 1.8 million TEUs.
Kiewit, contracted under a design-build model, provided design and construction services for the Phase 2B Stage 1A portion of the project. This phase increased the terminal’s capacity by 250,000 TEUs and expanded the container yard through significant infill work. The project scope included:
- Expanding the container yard by reclaiming an additional 4.4 hectares of land, creating 1,103 ground slots for 20-foot containers.
- Container yard work, including duct bank system design, high-mast lighting control and high-mast foundation grounding design.
- Constructing a new four-lane truck gate, including auxiliary power, control systems, electrical work and duct bank installation.
- Adding two reefer towers with 240 total plugs, along with lighting and low-voltage power distribution systems.
Kiewit utilized its extensive fleet of floating equipment, including marine derrick barges, tugs and workboats, to complete most of the construction. The team removed 82,000 cubic meters of soft compressible material from the reclamation footprint, 65,000 cubic meters were utilized in environmental offsetting and 36,700 cubic meters were disposed upland.
Kiewit engaged local Indigenous groups in marine mammal monitoring and awarded over 60% of subcontract work to Indigenous businesses, supporting local employment and protecting regional wildlife.
Additional project details include:
- Using Liebherr, 895 duty cycle cranes on marine spud barges, Kiewit 210 and multiple flat-deck barges to transport 400,000 cubic meters of rock and riprap.
- Completing 82,000 cubic meters of dredging (895).
