US 34 Emergency Flood Repairs - Big Thompson
Loveland, Colorado
US 34 in Big Thompson Canyon was heavily damaged in 2013 after one of the worst floods in Colorado’s history. The canyon section sustained widespread, massive damage with major sections of roadway completely washed away, along with access bridges and retaining walls.
As part of an emergency response effort, Kiewit teamed with the DOT to restore access along US 34 in less than two months.
Kiewit was awarded the permanent repair project in 2015, which included removing and replacing much of the temporary asphalt, embankment fill and temporary channel protection; as well as re-vegetating, replacing guardrails and repairing fencing to make the road more resilient for future storms.
