Kalaupapa Emergency Repairs
Kualapuu, Hawaii
Kiewit subsidiary Healy Tibbitts Builders, Inc. successfully completed the Critical Repair of Kalaupapa Dock Structures project, a vital endeavor for the National Park Service (NPS) to secure harbor infrastructure crucial for the Kalaupapa Settlement residents. The fast-tracked initiative addressed urgent repairs to protective structures and docks, essential for withstanding heavy surf conditions. A key focus was the severely undermined revetment and buttress wall supporting a historic warehouse. Situated in the remote and controlled-access Kalaupapa Settlement National Park on Molokai’s north shore, accessibility posed challenges, with limited options such as a charter flight, a 3-mile hike, mule ride down a 2,000-foot trail, or a 40-mile boat journey from Oahu.
The project received the 2013 Build Hawaii Award of Excellence and the Grand Award for the best 2012 construction project in Hawaii from the General Contractors Association.
