SHEP Inner Harbor Dredging
Savannah, Georgia
As part of the third and final phase of a dredging initiative for the greater Savannah Harbor Expansion Project (SHEP), Kiewit Corporation subsidiary Weeks Marine, Inc. deepened 70,000 feet of the harbor channel, from Tybee Island east of Savannah to the western limit of the project area in downtown Savannah. This encompassed maintenance work to restore the harbor’s baseline depth, with the primary focus on deepening the channel.
The project team removed 10.5 million cubic yards of sediment using Weeks’ JS Chatry cutter head dredge and then used the Weeks 506 Bucket Dredge to sift through the sediment, uncovering Revolutionary War artifacts and remnants. Weeks’ efforts unearthed pieces from Revolutionary War ships, cannons, cannonballs, anchors and other items tied to the 1779 Siege of Savannah.
