Everett Naval Station Carrier Pier
Everett, Washington
Kiewit completed the $56 million Puget Sound Carrier Support Complex in February 1992 for the Department of the Navy. The pier provides mooring facilities for the aircraft carrier base. The contract included construction of a 1,680-foot-long by 126-foot-wide carrier pier and a 470-foot-long by 144-foot-wide marginal wharf for escort vessels. The carrier pier is supported on 1,162 24-inch-wide octagonal hollow prestressed concrete piles, which are 116 feet to 190 feet tall. The wharf is founded on 557 20-inch-wide octagonal solid prestressed concrete piles.
The pier possesses the required ship service utilities, including steam, potable water, oily water, sanitary sewer, and shore power electrical service and communications lines. Three electrical substations are located below the deck in concrete vaults that were cast off-site in a floating dry dock. The contract included 940,000 cubic yards of dredging and placement of 45,000 tons of rip rap.
