SR 202 Red Mountain
Tempe, Arizona
This design-build project involved the widening of 10 miles of the SR 202L freeway through Phoenix and Tempe from the SR 51/I-10 interchange to the SR 101L interchange in Tempe. The scope of this fast-track project, which included adding general purpose and auxiliary lanes, required Kiewit to design and construct 22 bridge widenings and 18 on- and off-ramps. Two of the most challenging bridge widenings were on the ‘One-Mile’ Bridge over the Salt River Channel and the Indian Bend Wash bridge over a portion of Tempe Town Lake. Major quantities included 52,000 CY of structural concrete, 13 million pounds of reinforcing steel, 500,000 SF of retaining and noise walls, 310,000 CY of roadway embankment, and 147,000 SY of concrete pavement. Accounting for up-front design time and several schedule constraints, the Kiewit team was required to complete almost all the construction within 13 months in order to finish the project within its proposed 600-calendar-day schedule. This $191 million project was completed in 2011.
