Completed a full two and a half months ahead of schedule in December 2004, the Greater Des Moines Energy Center provides an environmentally friendly and economical source of power for 160,000 Iowa homes and businesses.
The Kiewit team was awarded the contract to engineer, procure and construct the 540-megawatt combined cycle power plant. By effectively integrating the plant’s design, procurement and construction processes, the team was able to meet its goal of early completion.
The team also worked closely with the owner and vendors to accelerate the delivery of equipment. The early delivery substantially reduced the amount of overtime required to install the equipment. Additional construction time was saved by separating the simple cycle’s control system from that of the combined cycle. By separating the two, service interruptions were prevented in the simple cycle electrical generation.
Separating the control systems was one of many quality measures taken at the facility. The team also turned in an exceptional safety record, working nearly one million hours without a recordable accident.
