On January 1, 2011, Kiewit was awarded a contract to provide management services to mine and deliver lignite from the San Miguel Mine. Approximately 3.3 million tons of lignite coal is delivered to the adjacent 400-MW San Miguel Electric Cooperative, Inc. power plant, which is the owner of the mine. San Miguel Electric Cooperative, Inc. furnishes power and energy to Brazos Electric Cooperative, Inc. and the South Texas Electric Cooperative, Inc.
Located on the Island of Newfoundland, Vale's Long Harbour Processing Plant is one of the largest in the world to use a new hydrometallurgical process that will refine 50,000 tonnes per year of nickel ore in a more economical and environmentally friendly manner.
A Kiewit-led joint venture completed three contracts from January 2000 to March 2003 to construct portions of this diamond mine south of the Arctic Circle. A major feature of the project was the 3.9-kilometre water retention dike that encircles the diamond deposits — the first dike of its kind constructed in Canada.
Kiewit completed the engineer, procure, and construct contract for a wet front end for an existing ore processing facility at the Cloudbreak iron ore mine. The improvements allow the mine to process wetter ore with more fines than the facility could previously handle.
The Agrium Phosphate Mine is located near Soda Springs, Idaho. Kiewit is providing contract mining services to provide 2 to 2.3 million tons of phosphate ore per year. The final ore is loaded into railcars for final delivery to the Conda Phosphate Plant.
With winter temperatures below -20°C, crews faced special challenges on the Voisey's Bay Nickel Mine design-build project. Mobilization of personnel, materials and equipment resources was critical to meeting schedule objectives. Operations were concentrated in four major areas-the mine area, mill site, port site, and permanent airstrip and docking facilities.
This $9.7 million project involved working on the mechanical portion of Suncor's Steepbank Ore Preparation Plant. The seven-month project involved installing breaker drums, pumps, motors, drives and support equipment for the crushing, screening and initial hydroextraction of oil from tar sands ore.
