Market Experience

Marine projects demand contractors who provide special expertise and equipment for fast completion of freight handling and shipping centers and other types of waterfront construction. Kiewit and its subsidiary General Construction Company are proven performers, having completed a variety of ports, terminals, piers, docks, wharves, bulkheads, breakwaters and other marine work along coastal and inland waterways.

Over the last seven years, Kiewit has performed construction services on more than 50 marine contracts totaling more than $2.5 billion in contract revenue.

Columbia River Jetty - Warrenton, OR

Kiewit is blasting, splitting, sorting and loading 145,000 tons of stone and transporting it by barge to repair the mouth of Columbia River Jetty. The barge travels through Puget Sound and the Strait of Juan de Fuca to the Pacific Ocean, down the Washington Coast and through the mouth of the Columbia before reaching its destination in Astoria.

Ballantyne Pier Redevelopment - Vancouver, BC

This $23 million project involved redeveloping an existing pier substructure and constructing a new terminal building for the Vancouver Port Corporation. Completed in February 1995, this was the owner's first formally partnered project.

Canaport LNG Terminal - Saint John, NB

Constructed by a Kiewit-led partnership, this liquefied natural gas terminal is the first constructed in Canada. It will be commissioned in 2008. The jetty will span 300 metres offshore and will be equipped to receive liquefied natural gas from the largest tankers in the world.

Dalles Dam Bay 8 and 9 Spillwall - Dallesport, WA

General Construction Company, a subsidiary of Kiewit Corporation, is constructing a spillwall in the stilling basin between Bays 8 and 9 at the Dalles Dam Spillway on the Columbia River.

Graving Dock No. 3 Emergency Repair - Groton, CT

This $22 million emergency repair contract provided structural stability to Graving Dock #3 after a sheetpile cell catastrophically erupted. Kiewit Construction Company successfully dewatered the dock and strengthened the cell. The team's impressive performance led to a follow-on contract to provide permanent repairs to the dock.

Graving Dock No. 3 Permanent Repair - Groton, CT

After successfully completing the emergency repair contract at Graving Dock #3, Kiewit Construction Company was awarded the $32 million long term repair project. Crews developed an innovative concrete mix that allowed quick turnaround of formwork, enabling them to meet the project's demanding schedule.
