Kiewit Building Group Inc., a subsidiary of Kiewit Corporation, constructed the $21 million Maui Marketplace project. It involved the masonry construction of a 300,000-square-foot retail space on a 20-acre site. Five major retail tenants and a branch bank, added to the contract during construction, will occupy the space.
The scope of work included placing 2,200 concrete masonry unit blocks a day, totaling more than 200,000. The team’s 30 crew members placed the blocks, using 600 linear feet of E-Z Scaffold.
One of the major scheduling considerations was completing more than 260,000-square-foot slab-on grade work. Kiewit mobilized a Somero Laser Screed from the mainland to complete this work. The laser screed leaves the concrete surface in a very flat condition, allowing finishers to meet flat-slab requirements.
