Indianapolis Power and Light Company (IPL) provides electric service to more than 470,000 users in the area and surrounding communities, with Petersburg and Harding Street Plants, the company’s two biggest plants, accounting for a majority of that generation. In order to meet EPA Mercury and Air Toxics Standards (MATS) compliance, IPL is retrofitting five units at these sites with new environmental control equipment.
KCP&L and Westar Energy selected the team of Kiewit and Sargent & Lundy LLC to engineer, procure and construct the retrofit to the 1500 MW plant. The La Cygne Generating Station Environmental Retrofit Project includes the installation of two Hitachi wet FGD scrubbers and new Hamon fabric filters on Unit 1 and Unit 2; and a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system, low-NOx burners and over-fire air system on Unit 2 of the facility.
Kiewit completed this design-build contract to engineer, procure, construct and commission the new 600 MW simple cycle power plant at Haynes Generating Station with six GE LMS100s. The project eliminated the use of ocean water for cooling.
The Kiewit team was awarded the contract to design and install the Ghent Coal Combustion Residuals (CCR) Transport Project. Upon completion, it will condition, dewater and transport CCR from the four coal-fired boilers to a remote landfill storage. The project includes the installation of a pneumatic system for conveying fly ash, including fly ash storage silos, gypsum dewatering facility and bottom ash dewatering facility. The ash handling project incorporates a 1.8-mile overland pipe conveyor for transporting the dewatered CCR to a landfill.
Kiewit was selected by Kansas City Power & Light to provide engineering and design assistance to replace the existing boiler ventilation fans, dampers and associated electrical components of the Sibley Generation Station Boiler Building--a coal-fired facility. Four ventilation fans were added around the boiler envelope on levels 2 and 3 to more effectively cool the boiler and associated equipment. The east wall of the boiler/turbine building will be cut to add additional intake openings and motorized dampners to aid in proper ventilation of the building.
Kiewit provided project development services, including: site plan drawings, heat balances, water balances, one line diagrams, and permitting support for a 200 MW simple cycle facility adjacent to a 1x1 450 MW combined cycle facility on the same site. The project aims to satisfy area demand for peaking power and variable load from renewable energy sources.
The Woodbridge Energy Center (WEC) is a 700-megawatt gas-fired power plant located on the site of an abandoned chemical plant. It will generate enough electricity to power more than 600,000 homes while increasing grid reliability. In an effort to stay eco-friendly, as well as cutting edge, the facility will use the most advanced generation technology today and, when complete, WEC will be one of the nation’s cleanest and most efficient generation stations.
InterGen selected Kiewit to provide owner's engineering services for their new 230 MW gas-fueled combined cycle project in Queretaro, Mexico. Kiewit's services included: detailed review of documentation developed by the EPC contractor; support of monthly project reviews; tracking contractor submittals and schedule performance; on-site oversight during construction and commissioning; and owner's representative for all aspects of plant performance testing and acceptance
