Global Operations Center Renovation

Global Operations Center Renovation - Offutt AFB, NE

Under a subcontract with Lockheed Martin, Kiewit Construction Company, a subsidiary of Kiewit Corporation was awarded this $8 million design-assist renovation contract for the Global Operations Center at USSTRATCOM. The 14,000-sq.-ft. facility, located two stories beneath the surface, will receive an upgrade to existing finishes, electrical systems and fire suppression systems, while maintaining full operational capabilities.

Due to satisfaction with the initial contract (Phase I) USSTRATCOM initiated a significant change to the scope of work and awarded Phase II. This follow-on work, in addition to two other owner-initiated scope changes, is valued at nearly $4 million. Delivered under a perfect safety record with zero recordable incidents, Kiewit Construction Company met schedule goals for Phase I by reaching substantial completion in August 2005, while Phase II is scheduled for completion during late summer 2006.

Unique aspects of this project include strict security requirements regarding access to Offutt Air Force Base/USSTRATCOM. Coordination with USSTRATCOM security personnel requires clearance "checks" at the start and finish of shift, in addition to teaming with security escorts while performing activities on the base. Additionally, Kiewit Construction Company designed and installed a unique material handling system to transport demolished materials to the surface and deliver new materials into the Global Operations Center.
